Extension of Age Discrimination Provisions from 1st October 2012
From 1st October 2012, it will be unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a person aged 18 years or over because of their age unless they can objectively justify such treatment as being a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim. A service provider includes anyone (whether an individual or organisation) providing or supplying, or refusing to provide or supply, services or goods to the public, performing a public function or running an association. This includes for example shop-keepers, golf clubs, banks, insurance companies and hotels. There are however, a number of exceptions.
